Why are property taxes in Myrtle Beach so low?
If homeowners have filed with the tax assessor’s office to qualify as a year-round resident, they are eligible to pay property tax of 4 percent of the assessed value of their home. If the property is a second home or used to generate income, it is 6 percent. In addition, Myrtle Beach’s Tourism Development Fee gives all owner-occupied homes in the city limits a 76 percent credit on their property tax bill.
Is Myrtle Beach good for retirement?
South Carolina is a great state to retire in for many reasons. In addition to the warm weather, and friendly neighborhoods, seniors can take advantage of several tax breaks. Social Security benefits are exempt from state income tax and after reaching age 65, seniors can deduct $15,000 of income from any source. South Carolina has some of the lowest property tax rates in the country. After reaching 65-years-old and establishing one year of residency, homeowners are exempt from property tax on the first $50,000 of the value of their legal residence, once they apply for the Homestead Exemption.
